3 Key Reasons Why You Should Focus on Self-Improvement in 2024

When we think of self-improvement we think of therapy, self-help books, and podcasts that  only serve to give us conflicting messages on the topic. Let’s ask ourselves,  what is self-improvement? If you ask Google it’ll show you that self-improvement is “the improvement of one's knowledge, status, or character by one's own efforts.” However, I like to think of self-improvement as the awareness of my faults and a sustained commitment to my personal growth. As our lives go through cycles of  successes and lessons learned we should make an effort to grow. Here are three reasons why self-improvement is always important:

1. No one is perfect

Let’s face it: everyone has flaws. Whether it is our cooking skills or our short attention span, we all have traits that we would like to refine. It takes a truly self-aware person to not only understand this but also make an effort to work out any inhibiting habits.

2. Unlock your hidden potential

Many people stop themselves from trying new things due to the thought that practicing hobbies are not worth doing. They preemptively reject themselves in order to stay in their comfort zone of monotony. The next Chopin could’ve been the person who believed that there were more pressing matters to attend to than learn piano. A disciple of Carl Jung could’ve been someone who didn’t feel like they were smart enough to learn about shadow psychology. But this preemptive denial of one’s interest is exactly what keeps us stagnant, unhappy, and unfulfilled in our lives. Imagine how ecstatic you could be if you took that class, learned that skill, and found that not only did you really enjoy yourself but you were also an amazing student.

3. Your future self will be proud

We all know that when COVID-19 came about, we experienced an extreme amount of loss on a daily basis and these past four years have been tough for the world to get through. As we continue to become aware of how precious and fragile life is, we need to place an importance on becoming the people we’ve always dreamed of being. By focusing on personal development, we can finally honor our true desires by putting them first. Through this discipline we can prioritize our future selves and create a life of which we can be proud.
